“Realism is not only a detailed drawing and composition or form of colors, temperature warmness or coolness, defining the abstractness of an element that we feel, and see with our naked eye, but the concrete essence of Truth that encompasses the wholeness of reality.”

Gene Villaflor de Loyola was born on the 10th of September 1956 in Naga City, Camarines Sur, Philippines. He is the second of eight children of Osmundo B. de Loyola Sr., a World War II Veteran, and Leonida V. Villaflor.

He was married to Teresita A. Dequina of Roxas City. They have four lovely daughters who are all artistically-inclined. The eldest is Racquel, second is Maan, third is Soraya and the youngest is Clarissa.

De Loyola started drawing at the tender age of four. When he was six years old, he was introduced by his Father to Mr. Broulio Roman Dayao, who happened to be their neighbor in Frisco, Quezon City. Mr. Dayao, a graduate of UP Fine arts, is a very good artist doing landscape and portraiture. De Loyola was so impressed with the maestro that almost always after school, he would proceed to the studio of Mr. Dayao to watch him paint. He was so impressed with the paintings that one day he requested the maestro to teach him, and the artist was more than willing share his knowledge of the arts. He was taught first how to use watercolors and other media. At age seven, the first oil painting that he did was a copy of a portrait of a Russian scientist of a known Russian master, which belongs to a collection of the Hermitage Leningrad Museum.

When de Loyola was 13 years old, he has done a lot of paintings, copying from old masters and French impressionists like Cezanne, Monet, Degas, Renoir, and others, which fascinated him. He also admired the works of Picasso, Dali, Van Gogh and Gauguin. His first collector in 1969 bought the very first copy of Mona Lisa that he did. He also admired the works of Filipino masters like Juan Luna, Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo, Fabian dela Rosa, Fernando Amorsolo, Botong Francisco, Vicente Manansala, and others.

In 1974, he worked in an advertising agency through the help of his friend Don Manuel Gonzalez doing layout design. After a year, he resigned and transfered to PECO. He then decided to become a full-time painter doing on-the-spot painting in various places in Metro Manila such as Mabini, Binondo, Intramuros Fort Santiago and nearby towns where he met a lot of artists.

In 1975, de Loyola decided to join a group of young talented artists in Ermita to co-found Sining Binhi, an art group that wanted to uphold the development of Philippine art and culture. For him, he wanted to know the answers to repeated questions of many artists about our National Identity in art and culture. Sining Binhi became the center of young and professional progressive artists. To develop the artistic talents of its members, the group created educational, cultural, and scientific programs, which encouraged members to attend art symposiums, lectures, seminars, and exchange ideas, philosophies, and technical know-how for the group's exchange programs for local and international artists.

Gene launched art exhibitions in local and international galleries and museums, as well as conduct art workshops in urban poor communities like Smokey Mountain in Tondo and a fishing village in Parañaque, and later the talented street children in Baclaran. The birth of BUKLOD SINING in 1981 came at the right time, as the organization of professional, student, and out-of-school youth artists used their talent to make huge street mural paintings during street protests. This helped turn the political tide, and contributed to the downfall of martial rule in the Philippines.

He painted “Napipintong Pagtutuos,” in 1984, which dwelt on socio-political themes such as freedom from exploitation and foreign domination, and “Landas ng Kalayaan” in 1985. The said paintings are important pieces in the visual art collection of the National Museum.

Close to his heart, de Loyola painting the life of workers, farmers, and other common people is the result of his exposure and integration to everyday life. He captured the beautiful landscape in the countryside, the river Daong, the falls Batlag and Daranak, the lakeshore, and fishermen with a dynamic master brush stroke. Beautiful warm and cool atmosphere, and golden brown earth and lush green with red accent, which show harmony, were common in de Loyola’s paintings. He was a master of all media, as watercolors, pastel, oil, and acrylic can be viewed in his entire exhibition.

De Loyola became an art consultant and project director of “Sining at Kulay ng Kabataan sa Quezon City” in 1993 with Concerned Ladies of Quezon City (CLQC) headed by Ms Precy Mathay. He conducted art workshops, especially for talented, underprivileged children. In 2003, he became an awardee in the arts of the “Huwarang Pilipino" given by Huwarang Pilipino Foundation.

For de Loyola, “ART IS LIFE.” Based on aesthetic beauty and truth, he wanted to paint portraits to capture time and character. Using ink and brush pen on acid free paper, he wanted a mastery of perfection and precision. He joined various art exhibitions, and garnered both local and international acclaim.

Coming out of his hiatus, he wanted to emphasize that an artist needs to have commitment, responsibility, and integrity in a broader aspect in this world we call Earth.

On the 18th of April 2018, he was gunned down by unknown assailants.
