What is a supportive tool landscape for writing hybrid narratives?[edit]

What tools are in use in your team? Does the tool-use change during the experiment and why?

- Mobile Phones - Brighkite - twitter - flickr - wordpress - peoplebrowsr

Illustrate the information flow at your hybrid narrative ecosystem.

All the pictures will be initially uploaded through Brightkite. From there they will be sent to twitter, facebook and flickr. From flickr the pictures will be then posted to wordpress. The process involves several deteriorations of the information. As tags will not move from one platform to the other, we expect the objects posted on the last component of the chain (wordpress) to present differences from the elements posted in brightkite

What are the the needed technical improvements to develop a well-functioning hybrid narrative ecosystem?

- A better system to automatically integrate tags among the different platforms.
- A fully integrated platform that could post on different platforms, no matter the lenght of the post, able to post short stories such as on twitter and long stories such as one that can be uploaded on a wordpress blog.
- A global rating system, comment system
- A system that could graphically connect pictures one to each other could make stories creation much easier.

How do the topics of individual and collaborative narratives emerge?[edit]

What narratives would you like to write?

We initally decided to define a general topic for our narrative which would have been connected with Architecture in Tallinn and the signs that change its landscapes. More specifically our defined topic was "Time and paint".

Why do you want to bring out these elements?

Choosing to focus on Tallinn's architecture would be an interesting way to evaluate our perception of the city's urban adornments. Understanding what catches our attention is a good way to understand our interaction with public spaces. Understanding what catches our attention in public places is also a good way to reflect upon urban advertisement and guerrilla marketing.

What can be described and what can not be described about the place?

What What we can describe painting effects and details that seems important to us. And actually, there is nothing we can not describe. If someone is interesting in something, it should be described, because we share here our point of view.

What comes from your own life into the narrative?
Apparently all pictures we took and we blogged seems to have finally a link with our own life. Some of us were very interested in the urban art style design. And this topic is defenitely related to "Time and paint"

All the photos,comentaries...in general, all the things that you try to tell come from your own vision about the world, and this vision is influenced by your understanding, your feelings, in general from your own life. Specially in this experiment, where you must to take the pictures that you consider, you will select one picture or another depending what you want express through them, the subjectivity is working all the time. And, inclusive, in the case that you select a topic and try to work around it, the vision of this topic will be your own vision. Why you take a picture to this building or this street or this people? Because they trigger some specific sensation, emotion, thinking…in relation with your life.

What can a photo tell about ...?
A photo can tell our impression in looking at it. Sometimes we can find out out try to guess what was the story of this picture, because we know it has one !

What is the difference between a narrative and documentation?
A narrative should point out about the feelings,the impressions as a story could show. On the contrary, a documentation is only a way to describe something without any point of view.If someone need some information about something and have a clear idea of what he is looking for, he should read a documentation. Whereas a narrative works like a souvenir, like a person mind, and give a mental picture of his spirit. A narrative can also connect people because it tells an experience which can be shared by other people who have the same experience.

Locations[edit]

In this experiment you can freely choose any locations in the world.

Location of the project will mainly be the city of Tallinn.Other locations may be its suburbs such as the area of Kopli or Kadriorg

Document your locations using the map functions (eg. Flickr map, Google map)

As most of the team members did not have built-in GPS devices into their cameras, the task of precisely locating every picture turned out to be pretty difficult.

What are the most used technical possibilities to write a hybrid narratives and how they can be improved?

Our most used platform has definitely been Brightkite because of its semplicity on posting directly and easily on different other platforms at the same time. In fact, we realized during the experiment that one obstacle to an easy narrative flow is constituted by different and not homogeneous platforms. At the time we couldnt find an instrument that could efficiently unify different posts and each time we wanted to compare posts in different -places- we had to manually access different websites. Example: [1] Brightkite has been an easy instrument for sharing but it still needs many improvents to be considered a good -unifying- tool. What about an instrument that would allow the creation of narratives by combining posts from different flows?

What triggers people to collaborate on certain images and narratives?

- Find a topic which would grab people's attention
- Find related topics and integrate them in your story
- Find the right tag to touch as many people as possible
- Ask them questions about how they interpret pictures
- Fun
- Use of controversial subjects
- Relevance attributed by others (ex. the number of views and comments already made on a post)
- It helps being socially active

How can people use hybrid narratives in business, leisure, gaming, education...?

- Business :
Viral marketing
Write hybrid narratives about products
Contextualize a product - help building brand identity
Try to make a buzz with brightkite, twitter, flickr, facebook
Organize focus groups-like events. Different ways of brainstorming
Find people to hire according to their social network profile

Organizing a focus group with online technologies could result in a more natural partecipation and genuine contents.

- Share your point of view with them
- Find other related hobbies

- You post the songs and artists you are listening to
- You find music of your "neighbours"
- You discover new bands
- You can meet "music compatible" friends at the gigs

What is your theory?[edit]

From the theoretical materials and from Internet, you have to find some guiding theories that might explain what happens in hybrid ecologies and what helps to explain your questions.

In the end of the experiment, in the report you must compare the known theory with your own findings. Did you discover something new?

The result of the experiment have been directly correlated with the short span of time available. By observing the different actors of the project, the direct interaction between the different flux of uploads was clear. what could be noticed was that, as a matter of fact, each person's flux was influencing others on different levels. One influence has been, for example, connected with the topics that have been chosen: we could notice, in fact, a group of 3, 4 main subjects which have become "trends". Just as what happens in popular social networks (and what is easily monitorable through Twitter's trending topics page) the cloud of meanings generated during this experiment generally emphazised few elements.
