Wiki Workers United

I will not endorse Wiki Workers United or any proposed editorial strike.

  • Wiki Workers United aims "improving transparency and accountability from WMF leadership", but it is itself a blackbox organization. It's unknown who can say on behalf of WWU.
  • MediaWiki can live without WMF. It does not matter that MediaWiki core or extension are developed by volunteers or paid WMF staffs (though it is still ideal that we have enough user to develop and manage important extensions - e.g. Gadget 2.0, and hiring staffs is one of ways to accomplish that.). So disbandment of Community Tech team is not that important since nothing prevents former members contribute to MediaWiki (they are still trusted in developer community) outside WMF.
    • I do think paid members are still needed to run Wikimedia projects. The most important is SRE, but they are not yet in a crisis.
  • We need a "ultimate code steward" of software supporting the Wikimedia projects (include MediaWiki). Wikimedia once had a TechCom, but no body with such function exists today. Nor does Wikimedia current have a CTO (so Code stewardship reviews is not functional). So what is most important for WMF is bring such mechanism back. As the first step we should resolve phab:T283277.
