I will use this page to do some lonesome brainstorming about the hierarchy of Turkish Wikiversity faculties. By doing so, I intend to start building things in a healthier fashion, and avoid creating a backlog for the custodians as a result of multiple pages that I may leave behind if I change my opinion about something in the future.
First off, I will be doing some research by visiting multiple university websites from Turkey, and see which names they use for their faculties. Since there is a good chance I will be the only one working on TRWV for a while, I will not create a different faculty for every single thing, and I will try to merge them as much as possible. I must create a healthy infrastructure for my prospective fellows to build on.
Any contribution is welcome from those who read this, regardless of their level of Turkish proficiency.

Current situation in Turkey and some ideas
[edit]Here is what I've gathered so far:
TR | EN | Notes | Proposal |
---|---|---|---|
Diş Hekimliği | Dentistry | It is a health science, but since the education involves seeing patients, this almost always has its own faculty. Since there will be no patient seeing here, I think it can be kept under Health Sciences until someone comes and develops meaningful content, in which case I am all for a separate faculty. | Keep under "Health Sciences" |
Eczacılık | Pharmacy | Same as above, except for the patient seeing. :) We should wait for a contributor. | Keep under "Health Sciences" |
Edebiyat | Letters | The word "Edebiyat", which also means "Literature", is very common, but not representative. Almost all humanities and social sciences are usually kept under this, but now a trend is emerging to name this Humanities and/or Social Sciences. We should follow this trend. See "Fen-Edebiyat" for further commennts. | Keep under "Humanities and Social Sciences" |
Eğitim | Education | Teacher training, but its only distinction is to award teaching qualifications. Obviously, we will not be able to do that. I think Physics and Physics Education should be kept together, so this should be an integral part of Humanities and Social Sciences. So, no to a separate faculty. | Merge with "Humanities and Social Sciences" |
Fen | Science | The majority of natural and formal sciences are kept under this in Turkey, but the word does not really have an equivalent in English (Exact Science?). Anyway, what is kept under this should be moved to where we will be keeping the Natural Sciences. See "Fen-Edebiyat" for further comments. | Treat as "Natural Sciences" |
Fen-Edebiyat | Arts and Sciences (lit. Science-Letters) |
It was once mandatory for Turkish universities to have this one, it was a precondition to get permission. It is sometimes kept separate, and sometimes unified, if the departmental diversity is not looking good. That being said, it is an unhealthy grouping, and we should keep this separated by all means. | Divide and conquer |
Güzel Sanatlar | Fine Arts | This may be the umbrella faculty for all arts, including music. I am also considering merging this with Humanities and Social Sciences, as being done occasionally. | Keep as-is. |
Hemşirelik | Nursing | Is a health science. We should expect meaningful content before it has its own faculty. | Keep under "Health Sciences" |
Hukuk | Law | Always has its own faculty. However, it can be kept together with other Social Sciences until we have meaningful content. | Keep under "Humanities and Social Sciences" |
İktisat | Economy | It is common to keep this under "Economics and Administrative Sciences", which I am all for. | Keep under "Economics and Administrative Sciences" |
İktisadi ve idari Bilimler | Economics and Administrative Sciences | It is a healthy grouping, since both areas involve managing of some sort. I say keep, but rename. | Keep as-is. |
İlahiyat | Theology | This is a social science, but practiced with a POV in Turkey. Anyway, no need to branch out until meaningful content. | Keep under "Humanities and Social Sciences" |
İletişim | Communication | I get the idea behind this, and currently I am for a merger, but will review my position and come back to this. | Merge with "Humanities and Social Sciences" |
İnsan ve Toplum Bilimleri | Humanities and Social Sciences | It is not possible to separate these two in a healthy fashion, so this should be one of our pillars. | Keep as-is. |
İşletme | Business | Same as "İktisat" | Keep under "Economics and Administrative Sciences" |
Konservatuvar | Conservatory | All fine arts. | Merge with "Fine Arts" |
Mimarlık | Architecture | This is a fine art, and should be kept under that faculty for the time being. | Keep under "Fine Arts" |
Mühendislik | Engineering | This is an applied science, but that categorization is too broad. I say, merge. | Merge with "Natural Sciences" |
Orman | Forestry | Can be merged with "Ziraat " | |
Sağlık Bilimleri | Health Sciences | This is a good umbrella term, and should be kept. | Keep as-is. |
Siyasal Bilimler | Political Sciences | Can be merged with Economics, as is common in Turkey. | Keep under "Economics and Administrative Sciences" |
Sosyal Bilimler | Social Sciences | When this is used as an alternative to Letters, it contains Humanities as well, which is not representative. Should be renamed. | Keep under "Humanities and Social Sciences" |
Spor Bilimleri | Sports Sciences | Why not keep this under "Humanities and Social Sciences"? We will not provide any physical education anyway. | Keep under "Humanities and Social Sciences" |
Su Ürünleri | Aquaculture | Need to think about this. | |
Tıp | Medicine | This is a health science, but the field is vast, so it is only logical to give this its own faculty. However, it is unlikely that the departmen will have any meaningful content in the foreeseable future and there is no point in having a faculty with no content. "Keep under" for now. | Keep under "Health Sciences" |
Turizm | Tourism | This is usually kept separate, since it involves some practical training in a touristic destination. But it is a social science after all. | Keep under "Humanities and Social Sciences" |
Uygulamalı Bilimler | Applied Sciences | Not something we can work with. Tradionally includes the branches of engineering as well as the life sciences, including but not limited to medicine and veterinary science. | Divide and conquer |
Veterinerlik | Veterinary Medicine | Pretty much the same as what I wrote for Diş Hekimliği. Let's wait for meaningful content. | Keep under "Health Sciences" |
Yabancı Diller | Foreign Languages | This school offers preparatory classes for all departments (regardless of the faculty) that offer non-Turkish instruction. It also offers language courses (if it is a good school). Now, we have multiple philology departments under Letters, and they need to be kept together. We will also have some language material coming up from Wikibooks, so this merits a separate faculty. A problem though: Philology instruction is given in the respective languages, so if you are studying French Philology, you do this in French language. But this is a Turkish language project, obviously. How useful would it be if we provided Turkish language materials to teach about Shakespeare, Hugo, Goethe or Tolstoy? I am not sure. If we drop the philological aspect and focus on the language itself, what are we going to do about Literature? Can we keep it as a single department? The field is vast, so I have my doubts. Let's sleep on it. | |
Ziraat | Agriculture | Can be merged with Orman, nothing set in stone. |
Note: These are departments offering bachelor's degrees. TR universities also have institutes handling the graduate education.
