Content creation[edit]

Maybe you can create User:Thekohser/subpages of your user page and work there to draft content that could later be copied to the English Wikiversity. --JWSchmidt 14:53, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is this a stipulation for my becoming "unblocked" on the actual English Wikiversity? -- Thekohser 14:55, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This is an available option if you want to create content while waiting for Godot. As a personal guess, I doubt if any sysop at the English Wikiversity will dare to unblock you...or even hold a public discussion about your block. --JWSchmidt 15:37, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If my ultimate fate is to be ignored by the Wikiversity community because they are terrified of a chilling edict issued by a non-participating overlord, could someone explain to me why I would want to work on another website to feed content to that particular community of wounded cowards? -- Thekohser 16:39, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Certain things take time to settle. Here is a "wrong" way to read it. Some time back in the previous Act of this "Wikiverstiy: The Drama", JWS and Moulton lost their cool, were a little careless and provided excuses for the blame to be duly piled on them. Now it is Act 2 and SBJ and PM's turn to become the target, and they turned out to be tougher to crack or better connected. Who knows what would happen in Act 3.<Hillgentleman| ~ | > 17:01, 22 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it would appear that SB Johnny has resigned, tired of the moral collapse that Jimbo initiated (again). SB Johnny never "lost his cool", but now he's gone, all the same. So, what have we learned from Act 2?
Act 1: Jimbo injection + loss of cool by targets = Targets nullified
Act 2: Jimbo injection + no loss of cool by targets = Targets nullified
Indeed, who knows what would happen in Act 3? Oh, wait. I know what would happen. -- Thekohser 15:48, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
My reading is different. On wikiversity, having the tools is not everything. SBJ is still around, what he couldn't accept is that JW took his tools and gave them back without sufficient explanations. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 16:31, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry your reading skills are not up my level.  ;-) You see, "still around" can mean "still around" in the bossy, "I'll just manipulate this project to my will without the tools" way that Wikipedia's Durova has mastered. Or, it can mean, "still around" in the "This freakin' project is so messed up, I don't even have the compunction to post an I'm outta here notice on my User page" sense of the phrase. I think you'll see over time that SB_Johnny's actions will speak more to the latter than the former. You can thank me later. I don't mind delayed gratification. -- Thekohser 20:06, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
You don't understand wikiversity. don't try to think like you are in wikipedia. that's exactly our problem. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 22:44, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

ba ba[edit]

Wikiversity tends to attract thoughtful learners. One common response by Wikiversity participants to invading Wikipedians is to study the odd tribal behavior and customs of Wikipedians. Another common response to invading Wikipedians is for Wikiversity participants to curtail their participation at Wikiversity. A third common response to invading Wikipedians is for Wikiversity participants to just continue with their Wikiversity learning projects. In general, learning projects that have nothing to do with Wikipedia are ignored by Wikipedians. Do you really expect Wikiversity participants to generate some great revolution because of the actions of Wikipedians? --JWSchmidt 04:33, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, JWS, I have an idea for a very interesting learning vehicle. But, I don't want to share it with the garden variety Wikipediot. Do you think you could round up a few like-minded thoughtful learners and then e-mail me for a discussion off-wiki? My e-mail is ResearchBiz (at) gmail.com. This may be one of the last messages I'm able to post on a Wikimedia Foundation server. They are sweeping through and stuffing my account on various wikis down the memory hole. -- Thekohser 14:36, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Some people do not like Wikipedia being analyzed for whatever speculative reasons one can fathom up. Perhaps start at home? How about a self-reflective review of Wikiversity? --darklama 15:07, 25 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Why have I not been blocked here?[edit]

I am wondering why my account has not been blocked at this Beta Wikiversity (or is it just a matter of "when" I will)? Are there different forms of governance and due process here on the Beta version than on the English version? Are the Jimbo and Ottava and Adambro types of characters manifestly less powerful here, or is it more they do not see the need to assert dominance here due to the lower visibility of this sub-domain? -- Thekohser 16:06, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Is this a request? :) Ottava Rima 16:08, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I see your smiley face, but just in case anyone is wondering, I am not expressing a desire to be blocked on Beta Wikiversity. (Although I am perfectly cognizant that my continued participation here likely increases on a daily basis the likelihood of my block becoming a reality.) But, no, I am more curious to see if we might develop a theory of institutionalized power structures as they correlate with traffic and activity statistics. -- Thekohser 16:10, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Please note that we host lesson plans for universities from various countries here (e.g. Finland, Romania and Estonia). Beta is a relatively quiet place since the policy development has more or less settled down. Please help us keep the peace, and keep the politics elsewhere elsewhere. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 16:18, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Community Decision Required[edit]

Pathoschild has suggested that the local community here decide whether or not to implement Jimbo's request to block this user. Moulton 13:52, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

What most needs attention here at Beta Wikiversity?[edit]

If I were to want to expend significant brainpower and fingerpower trying to assist Beta Wikiversity, is there some sort of "laundry list" or "to do board" where I might pick and choose some needed areas for help? -- Thekohser 16:07, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Beta serves as an incubator for languages that don't yet exist or for projects that span multiple languages. I am sure translations would always be helpful for content that already exists. Ottava Rima 16:10, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I would only be comfortable attempting to translate non-English language content into English. Are there any shopping lists of that particular need? Or, does most of the content (as I imagine) flow in the other direction? -- Thekohser 16:12, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks fro the offer, do you know any languages besides English? You could look then at that specific category at Category:Pages by language. There is also: Wikiversity:Portal/En + Wikiversity:Babel
In general helping new users feeling comfortable around here is a good thing. ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 16:12, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have a passable knowledge of German, French, and (to a smaller degree) Czech. However, as I said, I would only wish to butcher content into the direction of English, not the other way around. -- Thekohser 16:14, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well, you can do that, e.g. for German + French + Czech exist already separate WVs: wikiversity.org. You could visit them + translate from there. Though I'd prefer than to place these at en.WV. But in general you can do it also here and it can be imported later on at en.WV.
Since it helps you in your learning (translating is not so easy as it seems) it is helpful also here.
WVs are also for learning (personal or other kinds of), ----Erkan Yilmaz uses the Wikiversity:Chat (try) 16:17, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Google Translator could be used as a first step in translating any page into English. --darklama 16:21, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • The key missions for Beta are: research policy development, wikiversity incubation, and multi-lingual coordination. What we need to think about is how to make wikiversity more useful and accessible to the teachers and students in the classroom, researchers in the lab, business people on the road, independent learners at home etc. It is a problem of creating a threshold of supply and demand and matching them. I have some long term thoughts here: strategy:proposal:integrated educational experience using wiki as a central coordinating platform and irc, video conferencing, blogs and emails as essential tools. . It is somewhat like a rose garden, but I am sure it will become our daily reality one day, and if wikimedia/ mediawiki don't do it, someone else will. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 16:28, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, well... research policy development is probably the most interesting to me. I would be happy to help shape policy, as such. If you think that could be helpful, I would assist. -- Thekohser 16:48, 26 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I elected to create a page in German (not using Google Translator, actual German) about the Wikimedia Foundation. I hope that helped. -- Thekohser 20:51, 7 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]
