2009: International Year of Astronomy[edit]

The year 2009 has been designated the w:International Year of Astronomy. I have created a coordinating page at en:Topic:International Year of Astronomy for creating astronomy learning projects at en, but would also like to collaborate with editors from the other language wikiversities. Drop me a note if you are interested. --mikeu talk 03:56, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What about to do it simillar like in the case of International Year of Languages?--Juan 07:30, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have started International Year of Astronomy. --mikeu talk 13:38, 26 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There are now stubs for a number of languages, but we need help with translations. Please see Talk:International Year of Astronomy for the list of things that are needed. --mikeu talk 06:05, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I completed the greek translation.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 14:12, 9 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Policy on Deletions[edit]

Wikiveristy in Dutch (nl-language)[edit]

"Minister Plasterk launched on 3 December 2008 an innovation for education in the Netherlands, with the name Wikiwijs. On Wikiwijs free online educationmaterial is written bij teachers and can be shared with other teachers." -> This seems very much like Wikiversity, maybe some kind of cooperation could be possible? Until so far only nl-Wikibooks has been in the picture as project which can work together with Wikiwijs, but perhaps Wikiversity in Dutch would fit better for the job. In Dutch this projectpage on the chapter-wiki is about it. Maybe anyone here having ideas about this? Greetings - Romaine 00:54, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Custodian[edit]

I propose that we give User:Crochet.david the custodian tools. Questions or comments? <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 09:16, 28 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think that we should place the page States of Wikiversities in the Sidebar. It would help a lot the newcomers and some people who may not know about this page will find it very useful. We could place it there with the name "States". If nobody opposes in this week I will do it but I would like to hear the opinion of some other members. Thanks. --ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 14:40, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good idea. But I am not sure if the single word "States" is self-explanatory enough. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 16:36, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you but I can't think of any other word. Could you find an other word?--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 16:28, 8 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will place it with the word "States" temporarily until we find a better word.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 12:41, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I placed Babel over Recent changes.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 11:17, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimania 2009: Scholarships[edit]

Wikimania 2009, this year's global event devoted to Wikimedia projects around the globe, is now accepting applications for scholarships to the conference. This year's conference will be handled from August 26-28 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The scholarship can be used to help offset the costs of travel and registration. For more information, check the official information page. Please remember that the Call for Participation is still open, please submit your papers! Without submissions, Wikimania would not be nearly as fun! - Rjd0060 02:27, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Suomi Wikiopisto (Finnish Wikiversity) launched[edit]

Congratulations! <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 15:06, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whether the system offered here worked? I have additions. How they can be discussed and confirmed? S.J. 23:54, 26 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I very much doubt that the system can change but if you want to discuss your proposed additions here is the right place.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 02:00, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That is described here - never worked? S.J. 05:02, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It works see for example Wikiversity:Multilingualism/En and Wikiversity:Multilingualism/El they are the same work in different languages. This page is also available in ather language too. By the time if you keep working on Beta I am sure you will understand the system more nut to give you an example the Multilingualism page was first given in English and then Hillgentleman translated it in Chinese, me in Greek, Crochet.david in French and so on.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 06:38, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Probably we have not absolutely understood each other - I speak about the maintenance specified in heading articles. In the beginning - simple idea, in article it is specified: Drawbacks = This system relies on the number of translators and their efficiency.

It is possible to use the autotranslator, and already the native speaker of English will correct not exact transfer. It will allow to spend much language discussions, without people-translators

As I use the autotranslator - whether in the beginning confirm you have understood mine the offer, will correct autotransfer and then let's it discuss more detailed.

Then I still will have offers, but in the beginning we need to adjust procedure of multilingual discussion. S.J. 14:53, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Some time ago I tried to create a multilingual project at IYA2009 and Talk:International_Year_of_Astronomy. It was a great deal of work trying to set this up and I have not kept up with the changes that have been made recently. You may have also noticed some of my edits such as Category:RU where I have tried to use mediawiki to include translations in the various Category:Pages by language sub-categories. I'd be interested in hearing suggestions on how we might improve multilingual discussions. --mikeu talk 16:26, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The auto-translator translations have not high standards in quality. They may do the work in your case because you do not know english so you use it, understand the meaning and finally you make the changes needed but if we allow it many people will not proofread it and many people will quit translating manually and start translating via auto-translators. This situation will lead to much lower quality of translations.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 19:11, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Here! It appears there are the multilingual discussions, for example here the most interesting Wikiversity:Scope of research. I think it in due course it is necessary to continue. That's it I also searched for these examples. They are difficult for finding to the new participant - therefore I at least have allocated similar discussions in the necessary category (but works on improvement more many). S.J. 16:51, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Custodian[edit]

SergeyJ asked custodianship for the probation time of the russian language. I propose making a vote for a week and then let a buro decide, so from me:

A week has passed so the vote is over.--ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 12:10, 3 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have made separate page for discussions about inquiry Custodian the rights. So it is more clear and it is accepted in all similar projects S.J. 15:48, 6 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator versus Custodians[edit]

Who can explain why term Custodians, instead of Administrator is used. What in it semantic distinction? S.J. 00:17, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at this discussion. In the context of education, "administrator" has a particular meaning that is different from "wiki sysyop". Typical jobs for Wikiversity Custodians involve tasks like importing and deleting pages. These tasks are similar to the work of a custodian in a school who might sweep up stray papers that fell to the floor of a school during the day or move some computers from one room to another. --JWSchmidt 14:39, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Translation and Revison[edit]

Is there a easy way to see the revision-number for a page? I think it would be a good practise to add the revision of the original document in the comment to any translation, specially for "official" documents like policies. That way any user can easily check that the translation is up to date without proofreading the whole document. Kaj 14:51, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is better for making with template application. Can show on an example as it will look? (If I correctly understand, idea good) S.J. 16:03, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, if it's possible a template would really do the trick. It would be great if you could make a template for that purpose or show an example of one. Kaj 16:25, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I while badly understand idea, can you could describe it more in detail? I then could make it... S.J. 16:28, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. If I translate Civility/En to Civility/Sv i want to show what version of ‎Civility/En I used to translate, so any other Swedish reader can check if Civility/En have changed sinse then. That way they also only need to compare the versions of Civility/En and translate the changes to Civility/Sv, not recheck the whole document. Hope it makes sense. Kaj 17:11, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whether such variant will approach? S.J. 22:35, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It wasn't really what i had in mind, but thanks anyway. When I have the time I'll make a template to show how i was thinking. Kaj 15:25, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. i'll be waiting. S.J. 16:48, 13 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Look at the bottom of Wikiversity:Civility/Sv, I had something like that in mind, but good looking.
On how many I understand {{REVISIONID}} is a number of editings of all pages in the project. Whereas only I will change any page, this will vary id though I not how many have not changed page. It is not necessary. In general it is better to use time corresponding to editing it it is more clear. S.J. 12:11, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I understand that you wish to receive semi-automatism. But over it it is necessary to think. It is necessary to know how to display date of the last editing from history - I do not know as it to make. And you? S.J. 12:18, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Still. To allocate the template it is necessary in the right upper corner. Then the reading can see at once, he reads what version. S.J. 12:37, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The magicword was the solution on my problem, one of them anyway. Kaj 11:49, 15 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

{{subst:Last edit|Last edit of page Wikiversity:Babel/archive/2010: 2010-01-28 T 13:04 UTC, by Kaj}}

  • In a following example to transfer in the template the first parametre it is impossible. He considers that it is not present. Disturbs span style = "display:none". Can you will understand as it to transfer in the template as parametre. I do not understand.

S.J. 19:21, 14 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

But it absolutely another, instead of that we discussed that!? S.J. 01:07, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have created page for inquiries about the status of a bot and have placed there the inquiry. I ask to consider my inquiry. S.J. 14:02, 9 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Custodian tools for User:Ciprian Dorin Craciun[edit]

Ciprian is a long term contributor and he is maintaining a set of courses in Romanian on Wikiversity. He may need the custidial tools from time to time. I suggest that he become a custodian for Romanian. Comments? <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 18:57, 19 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copied the nomination and added it to Wikiversity:Candidates_for_Custodianship/En. Kaj 07:19, 20 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rules of teaching preschool and school age[edit]

It is argued that the rules of Wikiversity, school and early childhood education should be stipulated in a special way. For example, paying attention to what subjects can / can not be explained to children. And as other requirements take into account the child's psyche and the level of ability of a given age. S.J. 20:56, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whether can settle down on page of the participant Curriculum Vitae (CV) for work search? S.J. 19:41, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Initialisation of some variable[edit]

maybe define the variable to allow a good starting when the request in bugzilla will be add

Variable in english in russian

$wgMetaNamespace Wikiversity Викиверситет

Maybe activate variable as :

  • $wgNamespacesWithSubpages = array( ??? );
  • $wgExtraNamespaces[???] to activate
It seems to me, the standard set here will approach. S.J. 21:37, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Where it needs to be placed. Help!? S.J. 21:46, 9 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Couldn't you just file a bug report? If you have problems, you may ask at mw:project:support desk. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 03:17, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
No. Likely we speak about a miscellaneous. Bug still are not present. Crochet.david says that it is necessary to establish initial values of variables (I so have understood). Where they need to be informed, that they have been established? S.J. 04:27, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly. You need to inform the developers because they are the ones who have access to the local config files in the wikimedia servers. The place to do it is at the bugzilla, and we call every such a report a "bug report", even if the software isn't bugy. You just need to sign up at bugzilla and write down what you want. I can help if you wish. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 06:34, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Now has understood you. Help me to make it. To me it will be difficult. In advance thanks. S.J. 10:00, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In the very least you can note it on the request page on meta [1], as it is somewhere the developers may look up. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 12:12, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

RU.WV is running[edit]

so S.J., ask to all russian contributors to stop editing the russian page in betawikiversity, ask to be a temporary sysop and a temporary "uploader-by-file" in meta to move all russian page from betawikiversity to russian wikiversity. But never doing a Copy/Past!! Crochet.david 19:39, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My request here. And I would wish the constant rights of the susop, instead of time :) Thanks ! S.J. 02:59, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You need to ask for it on meta:RFP. The stewards would look for community consensus. I don't know if consensus on the beta start-up project could translate to the permenant project. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 04:35, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Here is a discussion. I ask you express the opinion once again. S.J. 07:06, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of imported pages[edit]

Shall I delete pages which has been transwikied to newly-opened ru.wikiversity from beta? VasilievVV 14:18, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

For what purpose? S.J. 14:21, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Obviously, because they are all moved there and should no longer be edited here. That's what usually done on Incubator: all pages which are already moved are deleted. I'm not sure about Beta Wikiversity policy though. VasilievVV 14:53, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Instead of I consider that this right decision. All pages opened Wikiversites are left here. S.J. 15:03, 14 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Now that tu ru.wikiversity is open, pages moved need to have at the top this template {{Now in a project|ru}}. After some week, all page contain this template and will not to be used here, will be delete by sysop here.Crochet.david 08:59, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that there are links to these pages from outside. For the sake of continuity, I see no harm in keeping them with the template like "Now in project". In principle, learning resources could be translated to other languages and reused on beta, independent of what happens on ru.wikiversity. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 16:54, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hillgentleman, I support your offer. If we have agreed, I can put down a template by means of a bot? S.J. 19:17, 15 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Limited use of robots is fine here - we see them from time to time - so long as you are monitoring it. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 07:54, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Russian Wikiversity Agency[edit]

We would like to open a special structure in your Wikiversity: "Russian Wikiversity Agency". Our Russian-language Wikiversity started just recently, and we feel the need for a connection with the international community, so that our project developed in close cooperation, with joint teaching and research. If you have such an opportunity, please follow our initiative.

Thank you in advance!

With great respect,

Russian Wikiversity

Interesting. How does it work. <Hillgentleman| ~ | > 10:27, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I am very curious too, about how it would work. --ZaDiak(T)(C)@ 13:52, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ок, I will describe details a bit later, but in a basis Wikiversity:Multilingualism/En S.J. 14:36, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I apologise for autotransfer.

For example, at us courses on an artificial intellect and biocomputer science have opened. We wish to unite efforts. We inform on it on special page in your Vikiversitete Wikiversity:Russian Wikiversity Agency/Ru. On the basis of Wikiversity:Multilingualism there is a transfer. Active participants of courses use our materials, and we them. There is a multilingual training. It is important for the several reasons: in another's language it is difficult even to find where the courses coincide, separate themes can be difficult and there is a small quantity of participants owning necessary knowledge - worldwide them more. It then will promote carrying out of joint virtual conferences. S.J. 20:45, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aaa, sounds interesting. To be bold to come to cs with your "embassy", but why not to use Beta for this kind of sharing. For example, we allready tryed to use it in here International Year of Astronomy.--Juan de Vojníkov 16:47, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Main objective of Beta is preparation of new language sections. I know that Beta reflected still as coordination of multilingual sections. But actually it does not carry out this role. I see in it some reasons. New participants do not know about existence of Beta. For discussion it is more difficult to go through Beta through directly. Materials are not on Bete that interferes with their direct use. There is a factor of "the distributed responsibility" - when address to whom that not particularly - nobody answers:) S.J. 18:02, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
At least the system of the notice and inquiries in concrete language section of Wikiversity is necessary S.J. 18:08, 27 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sandbox Server renewal[edit]

Hello folks. I am coming here today, to warm you up for a discussion about a renewal of Sandbox Server. Sandbox Server was something, which for the last 2 years was a place, where people can took a part of Moodle courses, where people deployed their files and experimented with MediaWiki or Moodle. This time I am proposing to open this concept to cover participants of all Wikiversities and interests. If you are interested in this, come to Wikiversity Beta (<--this is a link there) to discuss and help to set it up. On the other side have a Marry Christmas and Happy New year!--Juan de Vojníkov 20:53, 22 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
